During the holidays I kept seeing pillows made of sweaters out there in "blog-o-land" and just loved them so I decided to make some for Valentines. Off to the thrift stores to find some pink and red sweaters just for my project. One thing I like about our local Salvation Army store is that all of the clothes are arranged by color so it is very easy to find exactly what I was looking for in a short amount of time. I spent $2.99 per sweater and it was also 30% off all women's clothing day. You've got to love a sale at a thrift store, right?
These are the two sweaters I purchased and I had the solid red one left over from my mom's project of making a red dickie for herself. Dose anyone else even know what dickies are? We used to have them as kids so we could wear a turtleneck collar under some thing without wearing the whole sweater. It is just the turtleneck collar with shoulders on it. Well, needless to say, Mom cannot find them anywhere so she makes her own.
I cut the heart shaped pillow out of the front and the back of the sweater body and then the edge and cording of the pillow out of the solid sleeves.
Because the sweater was so soft and I though the cotton cording would be too stiff, I used a heavy yarn for the cording instead.
On the solid red sweater I used fusible webbing and added a bright pink heart and then began sewing white buttons to it and filled in the whole heart.
I especially like the way that this one turned out. The buttons just seem to make it.

Your pillows look fantastic! And wow, you must have a lot of patience to sew on all those buttons! But worth the effort, because the button heart is a great detail :-)

These are fabulous, Judy! I just love the argyle heart shaped one! Funny you mention how they have things all arranged by color. I was just at our Goodwill this weekend and they are fixing things up and that is one of the things I noticed they did. I think it's a great idea and will make it easier for those shopping for clothes.

Ohhh..and the red pillow...with all those pretty white buttons...soooo pretty! I love that you used sweaters...but your pillows are really soft and cuddly! Thank you for sharing them with us...and the great tutorials!

Aack! I adore the argyle one - you are sooo smart to think of using the pink and red for Valentine's Day! Yes, I know what dickies are, I used to have a couple when I was a kid.

I thought I had commented... But I guess I didn't do the security feature after clicking post... anyways here was my comment... for starters it was thanking you for linking to It's Stinkin Cute Craft Thursday (ISCCT), but also was asking... no pleading that you post a more indepth detail on how you did the heart shape pillow with the cording. I am in dire need to make some like that for my sisters baby room before the baby arrives and I have no clue how to do the cording. It looks like you rocked it! Anyways, any advise or direction you can give would be great since I have looked for patterns and have found nada... THANKS AGAIN!!! Julie

Those pillows are beautiful. But I can't waste on cutting those sweaters. Can I just cut old t-shirts?
